What is the Working Holiday Visa?

The Australian Working Holiday Visa (WHM Visa) allows young people between the ages of 18 and 30 to have an extended holiday supplemented by casual employment for up to 12 months in Australia.

Under the Working Holiday programme in Australia, the primary purpose of your visit must be holiday, but you are entitled to seek temporary employment in Oz to help fund your stay.

Please note: There are no plans to change or scrap the Working Holiday Visa for Australia. The WHM Visa is not to be confused with the 457 Visa. The 457 Visa is for anyone who seeks sponsorship for up to four years with an Australian company who have jobs on the skilled shortage list.

Working in Australia Checklist

So you want to travel to Australia and work for a year, what do you need to do? Read our check list to help you prepare for your ultimate adventure down under!

  • Working Holiday Visa

    If you have made the exciting decision to travel and work in Oz for 12 months, you will need a working holiday visa – This VISA will enable you to work and live in Australia for up to 12 months.

    It is possible to obtain a Second Working Holiday Visa if you complete 3 months harvest work.

  • Apply for an Australian Tax File Number

    You will need an Australian Tax File Number to work in Australia - Most employers will require you to provide them with this before you start work, so it is a good idea to get this sorted.

  • Buy insurance

    You must buy travel insurance before you leave the country, fingers crossed you don’t need to use it. But it is good to be prepared just in case.

  • Set up an Australian bank account

    When working in Australia your wages will need to be paid into an Aussie bank account. This you can sort out when you arrive in Oz, you will need to take along your passport and some money to get started.

  • Book your flight

    Decide which fantastic Aussie Gateway city you want to start your adventure in and get your flight booked.

What do I need to get a PostFX™ Currency Card?

Two forms of ID are required to open a PostFX™ Card:
Proof of name: Passport or EU driving licence.
Proof of address: Utility bill, Revenue Commissioners, or DSFA document not more than 6 months old.

What fees apply?

Use in shops, restaurants , EPOS is free. Fees apply to ATM withdrawals only CAD $3.25.

What is the maximum amount I can load?

The maximum load amount is $10,000 Australian Dollars and a maximum annual balance of $36,000 Australian Dollars.

Can I top up online?

Yes, you can top up your card online at postfx.ie.
